MCC K-Kids Have a Great Year
By: Nikki Cheskie – MCC Mental Health Coordinator and K-Kids Advisor
MCC K-Kids is a youth-based community service organization that is open to all 5th and 6th grade students here at MCC. We are sponsored by the Slayton Kiwanis Club. We had a wonderful group of 24 students this year who participated with big hearts and lots of enthusiasm!
K-Kids helped the Slayton Kiwanis with their Pancake Breakfast last fall, as well as the Soup and Dessert lunch this spring. They also invited MCC students to participate in Dollar Day at Christmas time. They collected over $400 to donate to The Murray County Christmas Project! We also got to celebrate the season with Christmas trivia and a fun party.
Our November project included making table decorations for the MCC Veteran’s Day Program, which the veterans were invited to take home. In February, the group made Staff Appreciation Valentines for our MCC staff. We also decorated placemats for Slayton Senior Dining this year.
K-Kids recently completed their big fundraiser for the year. Students were invited to purchase May Baskets for their friends. K-Kids made 640 May Baskets with some help from our adult Kiwanis friends! We made sure that each student in the West building received a May Basket. The K-Kids group has decided to donate proceeds from this fundraiser to the Ronald McDonald House in both Sioux Falls, SD and Rochester, MN., as well as donating funds to help purchase playground balls at MCC Elementary.
K-Kids celebrated the end of a successful year with a pizza party at the Pizza Ranch. Thanks goes out to the Slayton Kiwanis for sponsoring our group. I would personally like to thank Kiwanis members, Marv Nysetvold and Kim Holm, as well as all of the K-Kids parents for supporting our group this year.
